About Us

Dr James Leahey is a Consultant Adult General Psychiatrist.

He graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Science in 1989 and a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (Hons.) in 1993 and from the University of Melbourne with a Master of Medicine (Psychiatry) in 2003.


Dr Leahey has been a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists since 2003 and is a foundation Fellow of the College's Faculty of Forensic Psychiatry.


In addition to his part-time private practice, Dr Leahey has an appointment at St. Vincent's hospital (Melbourne) where he is Clinical Director of the Crisis Assessment and Treatment Service (CATS), Psychiatric Triage, Emergency Department Mental Health, Police and Clinician Emergency Response (PACER) and the Hospital Outreach Post-Suicidal Engagement (HOPE) service.


In his private practice Dr Leahey accepts referrals of patients aged between the ages of 18 and 65.

Patients outside this range should seek referral to a specialist Child and Adolescent or Old Age psychiatrist.


Dr Leahey does not treat patients with eating disorders, attention-deficit disorders, autism spectrum disorders,

intellectual disability or peripartum mental health issues.

He does not prescribe stimulants.


Dr Leahey does not accept patients on a Bulk Bill basis.


All appointments are in-person except by prior arrangement with the office.

New patients will not be able to access telehealth until the completion of the assessment phase.


The office is open at the following times:

Monday: 12.30pm to 5.30pm

Tuesday: 7.30am to 6.30pm

Thursday 7.30am to 6.30pm

(except alternate weeks where the office does not open on Thursday until 9.30am)
